Pastor Justin Jenkins

In Light of Eternity

Scripture

1 John 2:17 (NIV)

The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

Main Idea

This world is passing away, and the seasons of our lives move faster than we expect. When we look at today in light of eternity, we see what actually matters and what only feels urgent. Living with eternity in view rests on three truths.

  • Time is Short - So Today Matters: obedience delayed is obedience missed, so act on what God is asking of you now.
  • Eternity is Forever - So Today Matters: some things that feel huge are tiny in eternity, and small acts of faithfulness are enormous.
  • God's Grace is Great - So Tomorrow Matters: failure does not get the final word, because grace gives you a future to be faithful in.

Something doesn't have to take a long time to matter for a long time.

Discussion Questions

  1. When you review your life in light of eternity, what feels big right now that is actually small, and what small thing might matter far longer than you think?
  2. Where has God given you a step to take that you have been putting off until things settle down or the timing feels better?
  3. Pastor Justin said, "Knowing that time is short shouldn't make us frantic. It should make us faithful." What is the difference between a frantic life and a faithful one for you?
  4. How does the way Jesus restored Peter after his failure change how you see a moment you wish you could do over?

Summary

This world is passing, but whoever does the will of God abides for eternity. Time is short, so today matters, and the opportunities and people God has placed before us will not always be there. That means we cannot delay our obedience or hand the assignments God gives the real version of us to some imagined future self with more margin. Yet knowing time is short should not make us frantic. It should make us faithful, because eternity is our measure. Some things that feel enormous now are microscopic in light of eternity, while a prayer in the hallway, an invitation to church, or a decision to give and build God's house echoes for generations.

God's grace is great, so tomorrow matters too. Looking at life this way reveals not only what counts but the failures and wasted moments we wish we could redo. Peter denied Jesus three times, yet after the resurrection Jesus called him to shore, made him breakfast, and restored him. He gave Peter a task, not as punishment, but as a promise that his purpose was not finished. In the same way, today's failures do not get to define tomorrow's faithfulness. God does not change, His grace is available again, and there is always a next step to take forward with confidence in Him.
