Pastor Justin Jenkins

Put It In His Hand

Scripture

Psalm 33:12 (NIV)

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance.

Main Idea

On Honor Weekend, Pastor Justin points past the honor we give with our hands to the hand of God we are meant to live under. Peter connects the hand of God to honor, and that should set us free from worrying about how others see us, because honor comes from the Lord. So Pastor Justin invites us to put ourselves under God's hand and to place everything we carry into His hand, showing us four things that hand can do:

  • His hand is big enough to bless you: when you surrender every area of life to Him, He can bless it.
  • His hand is secure enough to keep you: you can trust your Father with what you cannot trust to anyone else.
  • His hand is scarred so as not to forget you: the wounds He still carries prove He has not forgotten you.
  • His hand is strong enough to save you: the sin problem is too heavy for us, but His hand can lift and save.

Our lives, our families, our nation, it is all safest when it is in the hand of God.

Discussion Questions

  1. When you look at your own hands, what story do they tell you, and what would it mean to put what you are carrying into God's hand instead?
  2. Pastor Justin said that whenever we worry, we are functioning as practical atheists, acting as if we have no Father who knows and cares for us. Where does worry reveal a place you are not yet trusting God?
  3. Why do you think it can be hardest to trust God when we are in pain, and how does knowing His hands are scarred so as not to forget you change that?
  4. What is one thing you have been trying to make happen in your own strength that you sense God is asking you to place in His hand this week?

Summary

Preaching over Honor Weekend, Pastor Justin builds the whole message on Peter's link between the hand of God and honor, which frees us from chasing recognition because honor comes from the Lord. He walks through four things God's hand can do, starting with the truth that His hand is big enough to bless you, since God wants to be involved in your family, work, marriage, rest, and enjoyment, not just part of your life. From there he shows that His hand is secure enough to keep you, because unlike people who have broken our trust, our Father can be trusted with our worries, our hope, and our very souls. When pain whispers that God has forgotten us, Pastor Justin points to Isaiah and to the cross to show that His hand is scarred so as not to forget you, with wounds Jesus still carries as proof of His love. Finally he names our deepest issue as a sin problem too heavy for our own hands, which is why His hand is strong enough to save you, just as a sleeping child is carried to bed by a father's strength and not her own.

The invitation is simple and hopeful: humble yourself under God's mighty hand and put your family, your future, your struggles, and your sin into His hand, trusting Him to bless, keep, remember, and save.

Take Action

  • Each morning this week, name one worry you are carrying and pray it into God's hand, trusting your Father to keep it.
  • Name one area of your life you have kept for yourself, whether your work, marriage, rest, or finances, and surrender it to God in prayer this week.
  • Read Isaiah 49:16 slowly a few times this week, dwelling on God saying He has written your name on the palms of His hands.
