The Wonder of Distress

Scripture

John 19:28 ESV

28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.”

Main Idea

Thirst is a longing each and every individual has experience with. Whether it is a hot day and you are outside working or after a hard workout, your body is parched and needs water. Physical thirst is not the only type of thirst humans have. Sometimes we can thirst for acceptance, love, or even physical things. Those longings are normal but when you thirst after the wrong things, you will always want more. As with all our longings, Jesus knows what we are going through. He came as a human to earth and experienced all of the same things we do but was without sin. When you thirst for God, you can find contentment that will leave you satisfied.

We all have something in our lives we are thirsty for.

Discussion Questions

  1. What are you currently chasing in life? How might that be distracting you from searching for God? How mioght you incorporate God into that desire?
  2. Where have you encountered "sour" things in your life where God delivered you or met you there?
  3. When you see that Jesus asked to have "this cup" of suffering from Him but went forward anyway, what does that mean to you?

Summary

We all have something in our lives we have been or still are thirsting for. This could be love, respect, acceptance, or a list of other things. God wants us to thirst for the right thing. The thirsts of the world leave you wanting for more all the time. Take the passage of John 4:7-18 (ESV) as an example. Jesus was at a well for water and had a thorough discussion with a Samaritan woman about natural thirst and how living water from the Savior can ultimately satisfy us. It was scandalous that Jesus even spoke to her but He was asking her questions to reveal Himself to her. She was like many of us; wondering if anyone would speak to us or why God would even bother talking to us. She, like us, was longing for love and acceptance through many husbands and Jesus saw into the heart of the matter.

Jesus knows what we are longing for and can satisfy the deep longing we have for Him and the things of God. All of the other thirsts of this world will be tamed by seeking first the kingdom of God.

As Jesus hung on the cross, He said, "I thirst" so all would be satisfied. He went through excrutiating pain and despair to fulfill God's calling on His life and deliver salvation for all of us. Through His sacrifice, we can now receive His free gift as proclaimed in Revelation 22:17 (EXB), "Let whoever is thirsty come, whoever wishes may receive the water of life as a free gift."
