The Wonder of Reunion

Scripture

Luke 23:46 NKJV

46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” Having said this, He breathed His last.

Main Idea

The final phrase in this series and the final phrase Jesus' life before His resurrection was "Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit." These 8 words contain a powerful message about our new relationship with God and how we can relate to Him. Jesus is sharing with us that God is our Father and loves us so much that we can lean on Him for everything in our lives big and small because God cares. Not only does He care but God sees the complete picture which means we can trust God with the outcome and the lessons we need to learn in the process.

Discussion Questions

  1. How do you come to God typically? As a Savior, friend, critic, or Lord? Explain why you chose that.
  2. What area of your life do you tend to trust yourself with more than God (work? health? family? money?) What would true submission and trust in God look like in that area?
  3. In what or who do you trust your life, happiness, and contentment with? Your own power, will, resources? Why is it easy to start trusting in something other than our Father?

Summary

Jesus' final week was quite a journey. Starting with Palm Sunday where He was greeted like a victorious King coming back from war; and ending with His death on the cross to save us all. His final phrase from Luke 23:46 reveals three powerful lessons for all of us when we are challenged in life.

  1. Sonship - Luke 23:46 - "Father". This reveals that God is not only powerful, He is also personal as a Father for all who call upon His name.
  2. Sovereignty - "Father, 'into Your hands..." - Reveals God not only cares, He is also in control. The beauty of God is He knows the full picture. If you are going through something, God knows what the outcome is and sees the finish line. You can trust His support.
  3. Surrender - "Father, into Your hands I commit my spirit" - Reveals God is not only supreme, He is also safe. You should trust God in the process because He cares for you more than anyone else. He has your back and will support you through everything.

Sometimes the simply statements carry the biggest weight and message for us in scripture. This statement helps us understand the posture in which we can approach God and trust Him with everything we have on our plate. He sees you, loves you, and wants to provide for you. All we have to do is believe Him.
