Worth The Work

Scripture

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NIV)

9Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. 10 If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. 11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Main Idea

Ecclesiastes 4 reminds us that we need each other. When you go it alone, you are like a rope with one strand. If something pulls on it hard enough, it will break. When you look at a rope though, it has multiple strands weaved together to make it even stronger. You can pull on it with a lot of force and it won't break because the strands are pulled tighter together. This is the same when it comes to your relationship with others and your relationship with God. We need each other to succeed and be stronger.

For the church to succeed at reaping the great harvest mentioned in Matthew 9, we need each other and the church needs you. The great harvest are those far from God. We each were far from Him at some point. Fortunately someone joined with the church to be there to serve you when the time called. Your life, your life in Christ, your relationships with others all get deeper and more meaningful when you connect and jump in. You have a gift and God gave you purpose to live out.

Everything worth having in life requires work.

Discussion Questions

  1. Where do you currently serve at Velocity?
  2. What typically holds you or others back from serving or getting involved in groups or group events? What would you say to them to convince them to be involved?
  3. What has been your most rewarding experience when serving at church or somewhere else?

Summary

Loving and caring for people is a messy process. People are messy and good relationships with one another requires effort and dedication. Everything worth having or getting is going to take some work and dedication. Why would our relationships or walk with God be any different?

Velocity wants you to know you are loved and we want you here. All of the events and services at Velocity are built to connect and care for you. When you get involved and build relationships, you get stronger in the Lord and have people to lean on. Having those around you is critical during good and bad times. As Ecclesiastes reminds us, a cord of three strands is not easily broken. We want you to be strong and not broken easily.

There are reasons for you to want to join our mission (Matthew 9:37-38 NIV):

  1. There is an opportunity - The harvest is plentiful as Matthew reminds us.
  2. We have a responsibility - We are not meant to only love God and receive, but He wants us to invest too. We have a responsibility to the Kingdom. Your purpose is unique.
  3. You Have a Purpose - Your purpose is unique in the Kingdom of God. Only you can fill it. In 1 Corinthians 12, the Apostle Paul reminds us all that every part of the body is important. No one is insignificant or less important.
  4. The Reward is Eternal (Colossians 3:23,24) - Your reward is eternal when you sow into the heavenly kingdom.

We don't serve for the rewards. God desired you enough to put someone in your path to disrupt your existence and bring you into relationship with Him. He now wants you to do the same thing and serve to interrupt someone else's life. Serve alongside others and impact people eternally.
