Activate Your Authority

Scripture

Romans 12:1-2 NTFE

1 Every person must be subject to the ruling authorities. There is no authority, you see, except from God, and those that exist have been put in place by God. 2 As a result, anyone who rebels against authority is resisting what God has set up, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.

Main Idea

Godly authority is Biblical, beautiful and necessary. When you reject authority, what you are doing is rejecting God. We resist the authority God has placed on our life, because we think submission is a sign of weakness. However, the most powerful moment of Jesus’ life was an act of submission. His act of submission broke Satan's grip on our lives.

We will never be over what God has set under us until we learn to be under what God has set over us.

Discussion Questions

  1. Authority is a gift from God. Why does God give us authority? What positive and negative experiences have you had with authority? How is authority viewed in today's culture?
  2. An instruction is an invitation to be under God's authority. In what areas of life have you submitted to God's authority/instructions? In what areas have you neglected God's authority/instructions?
  3. In the Garden of Gethsemane we see Jesus wrestle with submission. Three separate times Jesus says - "God if there is any other way;" "Let this cup pass from me;" and, "Nevertheless not my will but yours." What is the significance of Jesus’ prayers?
  4. Which part of this message or discussion is most applicable to your life and why?

Summary

Your attitude towards human authority that you can see, reveals your attitude about your Heavenly Father that you can’t see.

Authority is designed by God to be the solution to chaos.

To activate authority, you must demonstrate submission.

We will never be over what God has set under us until we learn to be under what God has set over us.
