The Habits of a Healthy Heart

Scripture

1 Thessalonians 5:23 GW

May the God who gives peace make you holy in every way. May he keep your whole being—spirit, soul, and body—blameless when our Lord Jesus Christ comes.

Main Idea

Humans are three-part beings, consisting of spirit, soul, and body, with the soul encompassing the mind, will, and emotions. While the spirit is transformed through faith, the soul requires ongoing training and renewal. Taking responsibility for the soul involves reading it (self-awareness), feeding it with positive thoughts and emotions, and weeding out negativity.

Your spirit is transformed, but your soul must be trained.

Discussion Questions

  1. How would you describe the state of your own soul currently?
  2. How well do you think you read your own soul?
  3. Have you identified any negative patterns or toxic emotions that you need to uproot from your soul?
  4. Which soul-care practices mentioned in the sermon resonate with you the most?

Summary

The message emphasizes that humans consist of spirit, soul, and body, with the soul encompassing the mind, will, and emotions. 1 Thessalonians 5:23, highlights this three-part nature. We the need to transform the soul through training and renewal, highlighting that even after the spirit is transformed, the soul requires ongoing attention. The importance of self-awareness, positive thoughts, and emotions, as well as the role of personal responsibility in nurturing the soul, is essential.
