Pastor Justin Jenkins

The Building Blocks for a Better You

Scripture

3 John 1:2 NKJV

2 Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.

Main Idea

If your soul is healthy and strong you can get through anything. Your soul is made up of three parts: your mind, will, and emotions. The Holy Spirit brings the life of God into our soul, but our mind must still be renewed, our will must be surrendered, and our emotions must be led. God wants your soul well.

The condition of your soul is the greatest influence on your life.

Discussion Questions

  1. How did the illustration and explanation of the soul help you understand your relationship with God?
  2. Prior to hearing this sermon, what came to your mind when you thought about your soul? Have you ever considered the influence your soul has on all aspects of your life?
  3. Pastor Justin emphasized the importance of renewing our mind, surrendering our will, and leading our emotions. Which of these traits do you need to develop in the most?
  4. Why is it important that we physically engage in worship (stand, sing, raise our hands, clap)? What other aspects of our lives can you apply this same principle?

Summary

Your soul is the center of yourself and the eternal part of yourself. The condition of your soul is the most important key to a healthy life. When we accept Jesus our spirit is transformed, but our soul still has to be trained. We train our soul by:

  • Renewing our mind
  • Surrendering our will
  • Leading our emotions

Take Action

  • Choose one aspect of your soul (mind, will, or emotions) to focus on and intentionally train this week.
  • Take a step and engage with worship this weekend in new way
  • Reflect on the story of Ike Brown. Is there someone you need to forgive? Ask God to help you in this process.
  • Pray for your Group members this week.
