Mapping Out What Matters

Scripture

Galatians 5:25

If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

Main Idea

Maps tell a story. The book of Acts tells us how the Gospel was spread by Paul and Barnabas through their travels in Galatia. Through the preparation, opposition, challenges, and triumphs of their journey we learn the essential components of following God: 1. Keep my life clean 2. Keep my eyes open 3. Keep my purpose firm 4. Keep my heart grateful 5. Keep moving forward. By doing these five things, missionaries were able to spread of love across the Earth and we can continue to spread His word.

The point for Him is not your destination, but staying in step with Him and following Him. God will show you the next step you need to take at the exact time you need to take it.

Discussion Questions

  1. Paul's first miracle was blinding the sorcerer. Though this seems harsh, we learn Paul didn't find his purpose until he was blinded. What areas in your life do you need the vision to see how God is working?
  2. Paul and Barnabas did not falter when they were challenged or opposed. What opposition have you faced following God? How did you handle it?
  3. Gratitude in the anecdote for discouragement. What experiences have you had where giving gratitude helped you get through a difficult season?
  4. While God may not give us a map, we can map out what is important and be ready for his instruction. What is important in your life? Does it match God's plan for you?

Summary

  • Keep my life clean (Acts 13:1-3). Feelings of regret, shame, guilt, etc. get into your heart and drain you. Fasting and confessing purifies you and prepares you for what God has next. Saul and Barnabas worshipped and fasted before beginning their journey.
  • Keep my eyes open (Acts 13:9-12). When experiencing opposition, you must keep your eyes open to what God is doing. Paul blinding the sorcerer was an act of mercy. It wasn't until Paul was blinded that he realized his calling.
  • Keep my purpose firm (Acts 13:36-27). When you are in doubt or experience resistance, go back to God's purpose for you. His purpose is for you to know and love Him. Paul and Barnabas were kicked out of town. Instead of giving up, they focused on all God had done and moved on to the next city. As they continued preaching, God brought miracles.
  • Keep my heart grateful (Acts 14:6-7). God blesses grateful people. Gratitude is the anecdote for discouragement. When a plot to murder Paul and Barnabas was hatched, they remained grateful and continued spreading the message.
  • Keep moving forward. Moving forward is an important part of following God, because He is always moving. Following Jesus requires action and going wherever He is leading you.
